Venturini Baldini was founded in 1976 on an historic 16th century estate in the hills between Parma and Reggio Emilia, the heartland of Lambrusco wine making. Of their 135 hectares, only 30 hectares are vineyards, the remainder being left as wild woods and pastures that buzz with life and biodiversity. As one expects from great sparkling wine farming, Venturini Baldini’s vines are planted on the south facing slopes of their sandy clay foothills that roll from 300-400m above sea level with excellent drainage and a wide diurnal temperature. Moreover, Venturini Baldini was among the first in the region to obtain organic certification (1976). Their name has been synonymous with the highest quality Lambrusco for decades now.
They were fortunate to have one of Italy’s best-known winemakers, Carlo Ferrini, overseeing their wine production since 2015. His professional career spanned more than 40 years of working with many iconic Italian wine estates. In early 2021, Venturini Baldini announced Ferrini’s retirement from the estate and replacement by the equally famed Riccardo Cotarella , widely considered Italy’s number one Eonologist at present. The wines continue to impress local and international markets.
Tasting Notes
A classic dry expression of Emilia Romagna’s chief white variety. Pours bright yellow with green highlights and a gentle bubble. A floral bouquet, with refreshing acidity, fruity and lively. The ideal aperitif wine; enjoy it with salami, egg dishes, seafood, and mildly mature cheese.
Method
100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica from Venturini Baldini’s organic estate vineyards in the “Malvasia Emilia IGP” appellation. The grapes grow at an altitude of 240 m above sea level on clay and sand soil. This sparkling wine is made in the Charmat Method, similar to the production of Prosecco. It ages for 6 months pre bottling in tank, is bottled and has a final residual sugar of just 8 g/l making it a Brut style sparkling wine.
Our Thoughts
Made from organically-grown Malvasia Candia Aromatica grapes, this is a pleasantly aromatic grape (think apricot, orange blossom, honeysuckle, Spring day-kind of smells). Made like Prosecco (Charmat Method) but has more aromatics than its northern Italian neighbor, making for an overall different sensory experience. There is a whisper of balancing residual sugar at 8g/l R/S so it still falls into a Brut category and the finish is crisp and dry.
