Tomintoul (tom-in-t’owl) Distillery has a storied past; established in 1964 by two whisky brokers in Glasgow, the distillery changed hands in 1973 and again a few more times before being sold to its current owner in 2000- Angus Dee Ltd., owners of Glencadam Distillery. Named after the town of Tomintoul (the Highlands’ highest-elevation town at 345m above sea level) that sits just south of the distillery along the River Avon, the facility actually resides on the 58,000 acre Glenlivet Estate, located within Cairngorms National Park. Operating at maximum capacity (3,300,000 litres per year) and sourcing their water from the Ballantruan Spring, Tomintoul produces a broad range of non-peated, age-statement bottlings as well as a few peated offerings.
Tasting Notes
From the distillery: On the nose, bramble and red cherry fruit notes mingled with toasted brioche and amaretti biscuit. On the palate, is layers of cherry Bakewell tart, dark fruits, and marzipan followed by clove and pink peppercorn spices. On the finish, warming and toasty with soft nougat and dried cranberry leading into peppery wood spices.
Method
Matured in ex-bourbon casks made from American white oak and finished in Port casks. Non chilled filtered and bottled at 46%. The water used in production of this whisky is sourced from the Ballantruan Spring.
Our Thoughts
Nose: Oooo, we love a portwood finish! This smells like when you first open up a box of chocolates at Christmas; dark chocolate, caramel, peanuts, cranberries, and red currants. Almost some sort of cured meat note, too? I love it.
Palate: Slightly sweet on the front, red berries on the mid-palate with a lengthy, dark chocolate finish. Similar to the 14 YO, if you want to take some of that heat off, add a dribble of water to soften it out. Or leave it if you want to put some hair on your chest! ”
