More than 1000 years ago, the San Leonardo Estate was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda. The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance. San Leonardo is among the elite of the Trentino vineyards and specializes in Bordeaux varietals.
Tasting Notes
A powerful yet elegant red, San Leonardo brings together the colours, aromas and savours of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot aged in small oak barrels, melding them harmoniously into a uniquely intense, full-bodied wine with superb depth of flavour. Intense ruby red with garnet highlights. The aroma is expressive with balsamic notes, forest fruits, chocolate, tobacco, pepper and elegant nuances of bell pepper. The palate is full, warm and impressively rounded, with intense aromatics that linger on the palate.
Method
This is the iconic wine of the estate, with its roots deep in its centuries-old history. A classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere spontaneously fermented for 15/18 days in small concrete vats with periodic pump-overs and punch-downs. The wine ages for 24 months in a combination of new and second and third fill barrels. This red has the capacity to age for up to 30 years.
