More than 1000 years ago, the San Leonardo Estate was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda. The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance.   San Leonardo is among the elite of the Trentino vineyards and specializes in Bordeaux varietals.

Tasting Notes

A refined union of Merlot and Carmenère.  Pronounced aromas of plum, Morello cherries, cocoa, baking spices and cedar.  The palate is plush with silky smooth tannins and medium acidity; ripe plum and blackberry, earth and spice.  This is a refined and concentrated Northern Italian red that rivals similarly priced Bordeaux reds.  Enjoy with braised or stewed meat, a juicy steak or aged cheese.

Method

Villa Gresti is made from a selection of the estate’s best Merlot grapes with 10% Carmenère. The grapes are hand-selected, then destemmed and soft-crushed, with minimal use of sulphur dioxide. The juice spontaneously ferments and macerates on the skins for 15/18 days in small concrete vats, during which the cap is punched down daily.  After fermentation in cement tanks, the wine begins to mature in small 225-litre barrels, where it will stay for 12 to 14 months and bottle aging for at least 12 months.
