Family owned, Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia, is under the direction of two generations who work with a team of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking alongside the world’s finest. In 1972, legendary California winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan in the transformation of their cattle farm into Leeuwin Estate.
Enjoying its first commercial vintage in 1979, Leeuwin was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1981 “Art Series” Chardonnay. The international accolades have continued and Leeuwin now exports to 30 markets. Celebrating the combination of fine wine, food, art and music, Leeuwin features an award winning restaurant, cellardoor, and art gallery.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, red and black fruits are dominate with some dried berries – added dried herbs, sweet spices, and tobacco linger as well. On the palate, complex, layered, and elegant all at the same time. Black and red fruits carry through to the palate with added cocoa and coffee notes, fine grained powdery tannins and a persistent satisfying finish.
Method
Made up of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec, after individual berry sorting and cold soaking, fermentation took place in closed, static fermenters at temperatures between 26C-30C with extraction by pumping over each individual parcel three times daily. After malolactic fermentation entirely in barrels and 9 months of barrel maturation, separate parcels were blended for further maturation in French Bordelaise coopered barriques with seasonal rackings. This wine spent 22 months in total in oak.
The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & ageworthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.
Our Thoughts
This is truly a Cab-lovers Cabernet Sauvignon! While California Cabernet is as popular as ever, I feel this wine would convert even the most steadfast Napa lover. What I enjoy most about Australian red wines is the unmistakable herbal note that lifts up the aromas and sets them apart from their American counterparts. Whether you call it menthol, eucalyptus, or something else entirely, this wine is demands your attention with its intense aromatics and powerful palate.

Beautiful structure. Combines the qualities of an aged Bordeaux and the fruit of a Napa Cab. Drinking beautifully
