Glencadam first opened its doors for distilling in 1825, a short period of time after the Excise Act ended. After many years of production, the distillery went through a tumultuous period passing through numerous different owners. During the World Wars Glencadam was mothballed and used as a barracks for soldiers, in 1950 it was bought by Hirim Walker who then closed the distillery in 2000. Glencadam was bought by Angus Dundee Distillers and began production again in 2003. Although famously used for blending, this distillery is now making a name for itself with its single malts. They have a core range that includes a 10, 15 and 21 year old as well as many different cask finished expressions.

Tasting Notes

From the distillery: On the nose, pronounced orchard fruits and vanilla pod mingled with aromas of citrus peels and toasted nuts. On the palate, sweet and creamy with layers of sugared almond and panna cotta followed with notes of dried apple, nutmeg and cocoa powder. On the finish, perfectly balanced with creamy rice pudding and gentle cinnamon spices lingering long on the tongue.

Method

The lye pipes of the pot stills used to create this whisky run upwards at an angle of 15 degrees allowing for more “reflux” when distilling. This creates a more delicate and mellow spirit. This expression has been bottled at 46% and is non-chill filtered.
