Maison Arthur Metz is a giant in the history of Alsatian wines. The estate was originally founded in 1904 by Arthur Metz. In the 1950s Arthur, a native to Alsace, relocated to Paris where he worked as a wine merchant, bottling wines coming from his home region. In 1969, he had to move to Epfig, south of Strasbourg, because new regulations required him to bottle in the region of production. The company was bought out in 1997. However, after this takeover, it merged with another company and became the Arthur Metz group and the company has grown to become the leading player in the vineyards of Alsace and the main producer of Crémant d’Alsace sparkling wine. The company’s business involves the whole process of wine growing and production. They have just 10 hectares of their own vines and purchase grapes from about 500 growers over 1000 hectares of vines throughout Alsace’s AOC and Grand Crus sites.
The influence of Arthur Metz is not limited to the vineyard and the cellar, it is also in the knowledge. Indeed, the group offers, through a school located in Marlenheim, training courses in the wine industry.
