Ile de Beauté is the evocative appellation name given to wines that come from the island of Corsica, France.  The island is located in the Mediterranean Sea between the southeast coast of Provence and the west coast of Tuscany.  The island is closer to Italy than France, though it has been under French rule since 1764 and is French. That said, Corsica’s Italian heritage is reflected in the island’s wines, which are made primarily from indigenous Italian grapes like Sangiovese (called Nielluccio here) and Vermentino.

Aghione is a pretty little village on the east coast of Corsica, where twelve families of winegrowers have produced wine throughout the generations and in 1975 founded the Cooperative Cellar of Aghione.  It was in 2006 that the winegrowers of Aghione created their own range of wines under the name Casanova and in 2007 they combined modernity and tradition by creating one of the first  rose Gris AOP from Corsica.

Tasting Notes

This is a light and fresh easy drinking dry rose.  Subtle red berry notes, pink grapefruit and minerality.  The palate is crisp and dry with a clean finish.  There is something very genuine about the wine’s simplicity and it would make the perfect summer patio sipper.  Enjoy this with light appetizers, green salads, ceviche or a simply prepared spaghetti tossed in garlic, olive oil, lemon and finished with a sprinkling of fresh herbs.

Method

This is a vin gris rose made from Nielluccio, Sciacarello and Merlot grapes.  Vin gris is made by crushing red grapes but fermenting without any maceration or skin contact.  Fermentation occurs as if it were a white wine, hence the delicate pale hue of this rose.  The wine is cool fermented in stainless steel.
