Tomintoul (tom-in-t’owl) Distillery has a storied past; established in 1964 by two whisky brokers in Glasgow, the distillery changed hands in 1973 and again a few more times before being sold to its current owner in 2000- Angus Dee Ltd., owners of Glencadam Distillery. Named after the town of Tomintoul (the Highlands’ highest-elevation town at 345m above sea level) that sits just south of the distillery along the River Avon, the facility actually resides on the 58,000 acre Glenlivet Estate, located within Cairngorms National Park. Operating at maximum capacity (3,300,000 litres per year) and sourcing their water from the Ballantruan Spring, Tomintoul produces a broad range of non-peated, age-statement bottlings as well as a few peated offerings.

Tasting Notes

From the distillery: On the nose, creamy and sweet with aromas of heather honey, soft nougat, vanilla fudge, and toasted brioche with lemon zest highlights. On the palate, nutty and well-rounded with layers of creme brulee and boiled sweets mingled with touches of mocha and amaretti biscuit. On the finish, mellow and warming with notes of shortbread, cinnamon icing, and brittle toffee lingering on the tongue.

Method

Matured in ex-bourbon casks made from American white oak, non chill filtered and bottled at 40%. The water used in production of this whisky is sourced from the Ballantruan Spring.

Our Thoughts

Nose: Damp wood, green apples, honeyed apricots, peach with some added white chocolate, almonds, and fudge.
Palate: Woody, baked apples, pie crust, and vanilla with a soft, full mouthfeel; it finishes with lots of clove and cinnamon. This scotch is easy going without being boring, and it’s extremely well priced!
