Laurent Martray manages 19 hectares of vines in and around the village of Odenas in Brouilly. While making the wines at Château de la Chaize since 1987, Laurent built up a following for his own estate wines which are sold at many fine establishments across France. Laurent’s vineyards are mainly situated on the top terroir of Combiaty in Brouilly, with a single hectare planted on Mont Brouilly, from where his Côte de Brouilly ‘Les Feuilles’ Cuvée hails. The vines for this were planted in 1916 and grow on extremely rocky soils, giving rise to a wine with a strong inner core of typically high Cotes de Brouilly minerality.

Tasting Notes

Bright crimson in the glass.  Pronounced aromas of violet, peony, red and black fruit.  The palate is concentrated and fresh, medium bodied, with lots of red fruit, stony minerality and long finish.  This Beaujolais cru would pair well with charcuterie, fillet of beef, lamb chops and game birds.

Method

Made from Gamay grapes from the Cote de Brouilly cru of Beaujolais.  The grapes are grown conventionally, are hand harvested and partially destemmed.  Frequent punching down the cap during fermentation which lasts between 8 and 10 days.  The wine is aged in foudres (large oak vats) for a period before bottling without filtration.

Our Thoughts

Lauren Martray comes from a family that is steeped in the wine industry. A third generation vintner, acquired his own small estate in 2002 near to the famous Chateau Thivin. His Cote de Brouilly comes from vines that were planted in 1916. The wine has a long maceration period and is raised in foudres and barrels. Aromas of cherries and spice immediately jump out of the glass. There is some serious structure here with a silky mouthfeel while finishing fresh.
