This wine is produced by Medici Ermete, a family estate located in Reggio Emilia, Emilia Romagna. They have been producing wines since the late nineteenth century. Though they are well known for their Lambrusco, they make a range of still and sparkling wines from indigenous Italian varietals and love introducing these wines to consumers who may be unfamiliar with the unique and delicious wines of this region. Currently, they practice sustainable as well as organic farming.
Castelli del Duca is line of wines produced by Medici Ermete from the Piacenza hills. The Colli Piacentini appellation is located in western Emilia, near Lombardy and Piedmont.
Tasting Notes
Pronounced black fruit on the nose; blueberry, blackcurrant and elderberry aromas with earthy and forest floor notes. The wine combines a pleasing fruit forward quality with earthy rustic notes and a medium bodied well concentrated palate. Bright Barbera acidity is well integrated and complimented by lots of ripe juicy fruit.
Method
This wine is a 100% Barbera grown on clay soil with pockets of marl and pebbles in the Colli Piacentini appellation. Planted with vines before the arrival of the Etruscans and though it is not well known outside of Italy, it has been a hub of wine production throughout the centuries. Characterized by hills and valleys with a wide range of meso climates and good air circulation. Much of the vineyard work is done by hand due to the steep inclines. This is one of the largest and most productive growing areas in Emilia.
