It is on terraced hillsides that Domaine Niero harvests top-quality Viognier and Syrah. This landscape is a key element essential to the production of Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph.
Rémi Niero, has taken over the position as head of the vineyard from his father Robert, who, from Rémi’s early age, passed onto him his entire expertise and devotion for wine growing. Robert Niero had initially acquired a small vineyard from his father-in-law, Jean Pinchon, in 1985. It is here that he planted vines and endured the difficult labor in those “chaillets” to make one of the most magnificent landscapes of our shared patrimony even more exceptional. Despite the arduous work required for this soil, his efforts have continued to be rewarded in the form of authentic and naturally balanced wines. With a long history developed through generations by Jean, Robert and Rémi, our domaine is now present in the appellations of Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph, which grants us the ability to produce a bounty of celebrated wines issued from the greatest AOPs (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) of the Rhône Valley.
The appellation of Condrieu, located in the Northern Rhône Valley, is considered one of the oldest and greatest in the world, its history was however fraught with difficulties. It has suffered through world wars and phylloxera which greatly decreased vineyard plantings and almost left the region extinct. Today there are are about 200 hectares of vines, all planted on the hillsides bordering the Rhône River. Perched on terrasses bolstered by stone walls, the vines grow, descending in rows down steep granite hillsides below Mount Pilat. This extreme terrain means that all vineyard work is carried out by hand in a slow and labourious practice. Once you taste Condrieu, however, you’ll see how all this work was well worth it.
