Presqu’ile (‘press-keel’) is a family-owned winery in the Santa Maria Valley dedicated to crafting exceptional, cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from Santa Barbara County. Santa Maria Valley is an American Viticultural Area which straddles the boundary of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties in California’s multi-county Central Coast AVA.
The Presqu’ile Vineyard is located just 16 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and is dedicated to 73 acres of vines. The vineyard is planted to three different types of rootstock, as well as own-rooted vines. Soaring elevations of 700 to 1,000 feet bring a diverse array of exposures to the vineyard, which adds to the uniqueness of the different blocks. The vineyard is dominated by deep sandy soils, which retain heat and provide a well-draining environment for the vines to thrive.
The wines are produced using both estate fruit and high quality fruit from select vineyard sites across the Santa Maria Valley and Santa Rita Hills. Presqu’ile aims to capture the true essence of its vineyards, vintages, and unique senses of place.
Tasting Notes
The Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay displays the complexity and poise characteristic of wines from the deep, sandy soils of western Santa Maria Valley. Bright and fresh on the nose and palate with just a hint of oak influence for added complexity. Medium weight with citrus, tree fruit and a steely minerality.
Method
Traditional, natural techniques – native yeast fermentation, native malolactic conversion and sur lie aging. Practices which elevate and enhance the distinctive character of this region, accenting its fine balance between richness and vivacity. The wine spends 11 months in oak (25% neutral French barriques /75% Austrian casks) and 6 months in stainless steel.
Our Thoughts
For me, this wine is in the precise sweet-spot of high-quality, Californian winemaking. It has the benefit of a warm climate with healthy, ripe fruit contrasted with the winemaking know-how and skill to make wines in the vein of Southern Burgundy. It’s a great meeting of styles which results in a rich, creamy wine that has ample acidity and remains bright and refreshing. Chardonnay of this style will always have a special place in my heart, and hopefully you’ll feel the same.
