Located in Alsace, France, in the small village of Bergholtz, Jean Dirler founded the Dirler wines by setting up as a “gourmet” in the village; in 2000, with the marriage of Jean and Ludivine, the daughter of Léon and Nicole Hell-Cade a couple years earlier, the winery name changed to Dirler-Cade. With 18 ha of estate vines, almost half of their vineyards are classified Saering, Kessler, Spiegel, or Kitterlé Grand Cru. All of their plots have been cultivated organically and biodynamically since 1998, convinced “that biodynamics is the best possible way to produce terroir wines.”
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine pours pale yellow-green, with citrus fruit, tropical fruit, and crushed rocks on the nose. On the palate, mouth-watering acidity is balanced by green fruit like apple and pear as well as tropical fruit reminiscent of pineapple. Use as an aperitif, pair with your favourite charcuterie board, or even try it with richer, seafood dishes.
Method
Made from 100% Riesling, the grapes are harvested at full phenolic ripeness from well-rooted and healthy vines, crushed and fermented in stainless steel vats for 3 weeks to 3 months and rests on the fine lees for 9 to 12 months before being filtered and bottled.
Our Thoughts
There’s a reason why sommeliers are obsessed with Riesling, and it’s because of wines like this. This wine is just moving into its peak drinking-window and is showing all the signs of delicious Grand Cru Alsace. Expect notes of honey, ginger, jasmine and lime all on top of a backbone of stony minerality and Riesling telltale petrol aroma. It’s showing absolute perfect balance and exceptional length while maintaining a delicious sweet and sour note. This is next level delicious stuff, people.
