Alex Krause and John Locke founded Birichino in Santa Cruz in 2008. Drawing on a combined four decades making wine in California, France, Italy, and beyond, they are focused on attaining the perfect balance of perfume, poise, and puckishness. Sourcing from a number of carefully farmed, family-owned, own-rooted 19th and early 20th century vineyards (and a few from the late disco era) planted by and large in more moderate, marine-influenced climates, their preoccupation is to safeguard the quality and vibrance of their raw materials. Their preference is for minimal intervention, most often favoring native fermentations, employing stainless or neutral barrels, minimal racking and fining, and avoiding filtration altogether when possible. But most critically, their aim is to make delicious wines that give pleasure, revitalize, and revive.
Tasting Notes
Tiny, immaculate Pinot Noir clusters sourced from just below the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains on limestone soils up against the Santa Lucias, and from 1800′ up in the Chalone AVA were fermented with native yeast to produce aromas of red cherry and raspberry liqueur, at once racy and concentrated with wisps of candied violet & spice. Unfiltered.
Method
Decades-old vineyards at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains provide the majority of the fruit for the Saint Georges Pinot Noir, and carry that meso-climate’s botanical extract, cherry liqueur raciness with them. Three sites in the magical Gabilan Range on limestone, dolomite and granite soils contribute roughly 15% of the volume, and an otherwise absent stony resolve grounding the blend followed by a lengthy passage in oak in order to preserve the vivid brightness, youthful immediacy and unaccountable alpine freshness of the wine.
Our Thoughts
Very light in the glass, but don’t let the appearance fool you- this wine is richer and more complex than you would think. Fermented using wild yeasts, partial whole cluster and bottled without filtration. This vintage was also partially aged in both concrete(1/3rd) and the rest in old barriques(2/3rd). Bright cherry, cranberry, strawberry and light floral notes on the nose, which follow through on the palate. Also present on the palate is a nice white pepper, strong minerality and light tannin presence. Fantastic as aperitif or with white meats, fish and vegetable dishes.
